A census people can rely on
Gaushala counts India's cows and buffaloes so that the people who care for them can be seen and supported. A census is only useful if it is true. Every rule below follows from that.
Report accurately
- Report only animals that are actually kept at the gaushala, today. Do not round up, estimate high, or include animals that have died, been sold or moved away — update the count instead.
- Count each animal once. An animal belongs to one gaushala; do not report the same animals under two gaushalas or two names.
- Pick the breed you know. If you are not sure, choose the non-descript or crossbred option rather than guessing a registered breed.
- Report milk yield as an honest average per milking animal per day.
Add real gaushalas only
- Add a gaushala, farm or household herd only if you run it or work there, and place its pin where the animals actually are.
- Check that it is not already listed before adding it. Duplicates are rejected at review.
- Do not claim to represent a gaushala, trust or society you have no connection to, and do not enter another organisation's registration number.
- Invite only people who agree to be on the roster, using their own phone number.
Photos and descriptions
Upload photos of the gaushala, its animals, sheds and land. Do not upload:
- Photos you did not take or do not have permission to share.
- Photos of animals from another place presented as this gaushala's.
- Close-ups of people, especially children, without their consent, or documents showing someone's personal details.
- Graphic images of injured or dead animals, except where needed to report a real problem to the Grievance Officer.
- Anything obscene, hateful, threatening or unlawful.
- Advertisements, phone numbers for selling animals, or spam.
Descriptions should describe the gaushala truthfully. Do not use them to attack another gaushala, community or person.
What happens when something is wrong
Every gaushala is reviewed before it counts in the census, and a reviewer may reject it with a reason. A gaushala found to be false, or to inflate its herd, may be suspended, which removes it from public listing and from the totals. Photos and accounts that break these guidelines may be removed.
How to report something
There is no report button in Gaushala today. Write to the Grievance Officer with the name and district of the gaushala, or a link to it, and what is wrong. It will be acknowledged within 24 hours and resolved within 15 days. You can contest any decision through the same process.
